I’ve photographed this castle more times than I could ever count, but at some point I realized I didn’t need another photograph of what it looked like. I wanted to photograph what it felt like.
There’s something that happens when you walk into Disney World where, for a little while, reality shifts. Everything sparkles. There are lights and music and cotton candy, the fountains are gold, and somehow you’re suspended inside this strange little bubble where the ordinary rules of adult life feel very far away. It taps into something that I think we remember from childhood, when fairy tales were real and wishes could come true and the world still felt full of possibilities we couldn’t explain.
I created So This Is Love using double exposure and intentional camera movement because I wanted the photograph to feel more like that experience than a literal picture of Cinderella Castle. The castle is still there, but it moves in and out of this dreamy haze of colour and light, almost like a memory or something imagined.
That’s what I love about this piece. You don’t necessarily have to know where it was made for it to feel magical, but if you do know, you see it. It’s a photograph of a real place, but for me it’s much more about that feeling of childhood wonder, when you get to step outside ordinary life for a little while and believe in another version of reality.
