Young & Free

from CA$95.00

There’s something strange about time when you’re a kid in the summer. The structure of the school year disappears and suddenly the days feel enormous. You can kick off your shoes, run through the sand, lie around watching clouds move across the sky, or follow whatever has your attention simply because you have nowhere else you’re supposed to be.
I think that’s what I see when I look at Young and Free. It reminds me of what it felt like to have that kind of time, when you could move at the speed of your own curiosity instead of a schedule. There was room to wander, notice things, get bored, make something up, change your mind and disappear into whatever the day became.
I created this image using double exposure, layering clouds over water until the two almost become one. There’s something about the openness of it that takes me right back to that feeling of summer, when the distinction between an afternoon and an entire lifetime somehow felt a little blurry.
Maybe that’s part of what freedom felt like as a kid. Not having somewhere else to be. Just being completely inside the day you were already in.
