Winter Song was created on one of those cold, colourless days that winter in Canada is known for: when it’s easy to believe the season has nothing left to offer creatively. But something shifted when I noticed a tree stripped completely bare of leaves.
With all its outer beauty gone, what remained was its structure: raw, intricate, honest. It struck me that trees are symmetrical beings: their visible branches reaching skyward are mirrored by a hidden root system beneath. We rarely consider what we can’t see, but the balance is always there.
This piece explores that relationship, the seen and unseen, the above and below. A quiet reminder that even in stillness or emptiness, there is complexity, energy, and depth. It reflects not just nature, but our inner lives too.
